Link schemes and google’s site ranking
Another overwhelming debate about link schemes and the google webmaster guidelines view on this area. Originally posted by esoteric blog and also being discussed on digitalpoint forum. The topic of debate? Well take a look at this article on google help center and quoting
This is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
1.* Links intended to manipulate PageRank
2.* Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
3.* Link exchange and reciprocal links schemes (”Link to me and I’ll link to you.”)
4.* Buying or selling links
Most of the webmasters are not concerned on the issue on 1, 2 and 4 but on the issue number 3. Why? This is rampant in the internet and a common practive already on webmasters.
But think again, maybe you are overlooking this one, again on the same page,
However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites.
Now, you see clear point isn’t it? Maybe we just took it too lightly, will this one be considered on what google trying to say? “hey I will to your site here at partners.php PR4 and you link my site on your link.html PR4.” Indeed it is, so the quality of links or the relevancy was already gone.
Many domain register review magazines and sites provide clear cut instructions as to how to buy web domain, despite the fact that it is so easy today. This can be clearly seen in the increasing number of domain registration cases. People are fast learners, and majority knows all about pay per click ppc. Some even think of incorporating affiliate marketing into their sites.

I like a balanced approach to linkbuilding: broker, natural, trade, editorial, trackbacks etc.
I agree that relevancy is key to any link.
